Word of Mouth and Your Job Search

Thousands of products and services are sold every day through word of mouth. It’s people telling people about great products and services. So, why wouldn’t you, the job seeker, want to market yourself (great talent) to people you know? I acquired my position with TeamPeople through word of mouth. When I was on the job search, I made sure to get in touch with my network of friends and family to let them know I was looking for new opportunities. You never know who knows someone, who knows someone else or who knows the person that knows of someone who has your ideal job opening. There are endless possibilities out there and the world is smaller than you think! But how do you know what to say?

When it comes to word of mouth – keep a few things in mind:

1. Communication

Make sure you are able to communicate clearly about exactly what you are looking for. It’s important to be clear with your network on what you are looking for and what YOU can bring to the table.

2. Confidence

If you are confident in your experience and your x factor, this will come across when you are talking to your network about what you are looking for in a new job opportunity and they will believe what you are saying.

3. Be Yourself

You hear it all the time, but it’s not an understatement. There are a lot of carbon copies out there. If you stay true to what makes you unique you will stand out and people will remember what you are looking for when an opportunity arises.
