Loving What You Do

Written by Kimberly Joyce | Jan 20, 2014 8:29:23 AM

So many times, I hear from people that they do not like their job or dislike what they’re doing. I always ask, them – “then, why are you doing that? Why are you wasting your time?” I understand that sometimes finding what you love to do might not provide enough for your family and can be a real challenge. However, statistics have proven that doing what you love to do helps to live a happier and more productive life.

Even Steve Jobs said that the best thing that happen to him was Apple firing him because it allowed him to be more creative and do what he was most passionate about.

Below is an excerpt from one of his speeches and words that so many live by and so should you!

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

I support this 100%. Life is too short not to be happy and not to love what you do.

So why should you do what you love?

Here are my top 5 reasons you should do what you love to do:

  1. You will experience an increase in self esteem
  2. You will be more motivated
  3. You will be more productive
  4. You will become a valued employee
  5. You will live a healthier work/ life balance

The list goes on but these are just a few and very important points. So if you are sitting at your career/ hating what you do, do something about it. I’m not telling you to quit your job to go into another career. Sometimes it’s as easy as incorporating what you love to do in your career or daily tasks with your current job. Maybe you are an Administrative Assistant who really enjoys problem solving but you do the same administrative tasks everyday - faxing, filing, answering phones and don’t really handle problems.  Then, why not think about a plan to be more efficient (looking into different software’s/ technology to help you with your job) or figuring out different tasks you can do in your spare time to increase your productivity but add value to your position. The ideas are endless.

It might be a struggle but if you know what you love to do and know what your strong at, your half way there. The next step is figuring out how to do it. Once you do that, you will be much happier and can almost guarantee the money will follow.
